Magnetic Permeability

What is permeability of the Magnetic material ?

Magnetic Permeabilty

Magnetic Permeability is the ability of a material from which we can know how a magnetic material reacts to an when magnetic field applied to that material. And it is represented by greek letter μ.

If a Matreial internal dipoles are become easily Oriented when a magnetic field applied to the material, so we can say material is highly permeable. And its reverse defination when the dipoles of are not oriented to applied magnetic field it is called low permeable material. In Our Previous note of Transformer core we discussed, matreial should be high permeable.

Permeability of Software Magnetic Materials

Soft magnetic material like silicon steel, it is easy to magnetize when magnetic field is applied. so silicon steels are regarded as very permeable material.  But many electromagnets and solenoids have cores made of iron or silicon steel, precisely because these materials are so permeable and used in different application becuase of its properties.

Below Material are soft magnetic Material and having good Permeability

  1. Iron
  2. Low Carbon steel
  3. Silicon steel
  4. Ferrites
  5. Amorphous material

Permeability of Hard Magnetic Materials

Hard magnetic materials having strong magnetic dipoles that resist an external magnetic field. This means that these magnets strongly resist external magnetic fields when applied. which means that they will not easily re-orient their domains when external magnetic field is applied against the material

Hard magnets also have a high coercive force (Coercivity) which makes it difficult to demagnetize them.It is typical then for low-permeability materials to be used as permanent magnets, and for high-permeability materials to be used as soft magnetic materials.

Below Graph is shown permeability of a material
